These are changes that you can make today, without having to go back to a blank canvas or start rewriting your whole life from scratch.
STEP 1 - TAKE CONTROL
How often do you find yourself in a constant state of reaction in your life? Whether you’re being bombarded with WhatsApp or Facebook messages or firefighting a barrage of emails, we often find ourselves in a position where we are not proactively in control of our time. This inevitably leads to a sense of stress, anxiety and pressure, as we constantly check our devices. Although it might seem difficult, a simple step first step to counter mobile addiction is to turn off automatic notifications on your phone. So that includes texts, WhatsApp, Facebook and email. Instead of those apps controlling your time, make the choice to only check them at certain points each day. This will immediately give you the sense of taking back control and have positive benefits for your overall well-being.
STEP 2 - ACT WITH POSITIVE INTENTIONS
We tend to underestimate how important a positive state of mind and positive intentions can be in affecting our overall quality of life and the quality of life of the people around us. Only 10% of life is what happens to you, 90% is how you choose to react to it. So start by asking yourself, What are the assumptions that you make about people every day? How do you perceive their intentions towards you? Positively or negatively? Notice how people react when you adopt a positive approach to a topic, as opposed to complaining or using negative language. You are likely to find that people will engage with you more deeply if you display a positive attitude, you choose not to gossip, speak negatively of people or lose your temper. Also, start being more positive in acknowledging and recognising the success and achievements of others. Be specific in the praise and explain what the positive impact was on you, in order to ensure that it comes across as being authentic and genuine.
STEP 3 - SPEND TIME WITH THE RIGHT PEOPLE
Spending time with the right people is really important, as after all, many believe that we are the average of the five people we spend most time with. So if the people around us are largely negative, then that will have a real impact on our well-being. So be mindful of the time that you spend with people and the influence and impact they have on you and your mindset. Also - make sure you’re finding time to spend with your friends and family. It's incredibly important to ensure that you have connection with others. Us humans are social animals and although sometimes you may not feel like it after a hard day at work, positive social experiences with friends have a huge impact on our overall happiness and well-being. The benefits of positive experiences and occasions, such as trips and holidays can often be felt far beyond the moment itself and having something to look forward to can be very beneficial to our overall sense of happiness and well-being. So get some plans in the diary and have something positive to anticipate.
STEP 4 - EAT HEALTHY
Bit of a cliche, but you are what you eat. What we put into our bodies has a huge impact on our overall sense of well-being. So spend a bit of time focusing on your health. I’m a coach, not a dietician but even I know that It's probably worth trying to reduce your carbohydrate intake and focus more on proteins. Spend a bit of time thinking about achieving a balanced diet that includes fresh fruit and vegetables. It will not only improve our overall energy levels, it can also help reduce snacking, if you take control and proactively plan what it is that you’re going to eat.
STEP 5 - EXERCISE MORE
We all know that exercise also has a huge impact on both of physical and mental health. Even a small amount of exercise can significantly improve your mood and reduce tiredness. Being sat at a desk all day reduces blood flow and the amount of energy that you have. Even just standing up and walking around every now and again will get the blood flowing and increase your energy levels.
STEP 6 - SLEEP MORE
Finally sleep more. In our hectic lives, we may perceive sleep as being a nice to have rather than an essential requirement. However medical research has shown that the importance of sleep should not be underestimated. Having good quality sleep at night dramatically improves productivity the following day. Even a 20 minute power nap has been shown to have a significant impact on overall energy levels and well-being. So grab a snooze during the day if you can and get an early night every now and again.
